The Red River (Kızılırmak) that flows through Avanos provides the red clay that has been used here since the Hittites (2000 BC). Pottery isn’t just a souvenir here; it’s a way of life.

The “Chez” Tradition

You will see many signs saying “Chez [Name]”. This is a local tradition meaning “The Place of”. For example, “Chez Galip” means “Galip’s Place”.

What Happens in a Workshop?

The Demonstration

You sit around a master potter. He spins the kick-wheel (foot-powered) and transforms a lump of mud into a perfect wine jug in 60 seconds. It’s mesmerizing. This part is usually free.

Try It Yourself

They will put traditional “shalwar” pants on you and let you try. Beware: it looks easy, but your pot will probably collapse. It’s great fun and a perfect photo op.

Where to Go?

1. Chez Galip (The Hair Museum)

Galip Körükçü is a local celebrity (Einstein-hair lookalike). His workshop is famous for the “Hair Museum” downstairs, a collection of hair locks from 16,000 women. Weird? Yes. Iconic? Absolutely.

2. Güray Museum (Underground)

This is a high-end experience. It’s the world’s first underground ceramic museum. The architecture itself is stunning, carved into the rock. Great for seeing historic antique ceramics alongside modern masterpieces.

3. Venessa Seramik

For those who want serious shopping. Their showroom is massive and feels like an art gallery. They have some of the most intricate Hittite-style wine jugs.
