Do You Need a Car in Cappadocia? The Honest 2025 Guide

Is public transport enough? Should you book a tour? We break down why renting a car in Cappadocia saves money and gives you freedom.

📅 January 15, 2025 ⏱️ 6 minutes 🏷️ Travel Tips

This is the #1 question we get from travelers. “Can I just use Uber?” “Are there buses to the underground cities?” The short answer is: It depends on how much you want to see.

Cappadocia is not a single city. It’s a vast region spread across multiple towns (Göreme, Üçhisar, Ürgüp, Avanos) and valleys. While you can get by without a car, you will be trading money for time and freedom.

1

Public Transport is Limited

Buses (“Dolmuş”) exist, but they run infrequently (every hour) and typically stop around 6 PM. They connect main towns, but

do not go to the valleys, open-air museums, or underground cities

like Derinkuyu or Kaymakli. You will still need a taxi from the bus stop.

2

Tours Control Your Time

The “Green Tour” covers Ihlara Valley and the Underground City. It’s great, but you move with 15 other people. Want to stay longer for photos? You can’t. Want to skip the onyx demonstration shop? You can’t.

3

Rental = Freedom (Usually Cheaper)

For a couple, renting an economy car (€45/day) is significantly cheaper than buying two tour tickets (€120+). Plus, you can:

  • Chase the balloons at sunrise (tours don’t do this).

  • Visit Sunset Point in Red Valley with your own drinks.

  • Drive to Love Valley for the best angles.
